We sort the news at the bench. Then we give a verdict.

The volume of tool news is impossible to keep up with: launches, price changes, model releases, sponsored “reviews”. Most of it doesn’t matter to you, and it is hard to tell which part does. A wrong call costs real money: one wrong subscription is $180 a year for something you open twice a week.

So Benchdict works like an editorial desk, which is what the “bench” is. We sort the incoming news, keep the stories that matter to indie builders and remote workers, and rewrite them in our own voice with every source named and linked. Each article ends with a verdict: our judgment on whether it is worth your attention, and what to do about it. Software and physical gear sit on the same site because the same person often needs both, an editor and the monitor it runs on.

To be clear about what this is: most of our articles are curated and rewritten from other people’s reporting, and we don’t test the products in them. Occasionally we get a product and use it for weeks. Those articles are labelled Hands-on Verdict and carry a Bench Log with the details. The rules for both are on How we test.

We are skeptical of hype by default. We also don’t try to list every tool. You won’t find a directory of thousands of apps here, only the stories we picked and the calls we made.

• Indie builders and side-project developers

  You ship alone or in a team of two, and every subscription comes out of your own pocket. You want to know which of the tool announcements and price changes actually affect your stack, and what it costs after overage.

• Remote workers who care about their time

  You work from home or a hybrid schedule and you’re tired of tools that promise hours back. You want to know which new apps, assistants and desk gear are worth a look, and which claims about time saved are just marketing.

There are two sources of income, and we want you to know both.

• Affiliate commissions. Some links in our articles pay us a commission if you buy through them. It doesn’t change your price. Every such link goes through a /go/ address on our site and is labelled.
• Display ads. We plan to show ads through Google AdSense. When they go live, they will never appear inside a Bench Log or The Verdict.

We don’t take sponsored posts, paid placements or payment for reviews. Neither income source pays for a ruling: we write the verdict before we see any commission rate. How that works day to day is on the affiliate disclosure page, and the editorial and testing rules are on How we test.
