Walmart to let AI shopping agents buy through dedicated profiles with spending limits
Shoppers can require approval for each agent purchase or set a spending limit. A developer gateway starts as a beta, while Amazon has blocked agents from Meta and Perplexity.

Walmart said on Oct. 21 that AI shopping agents will get their own profiles inside customer accounts, with spending limits set by the shopper, within about a month.
Walmart is building the checkout counter for agent commerce instead of waiting for agents to scrape its store like everyone else. Profiles with hard spending limits and approval by default answer the two questions shoppers actually ask — what can it spend, and can it buy without asking me — before the first agent purchase goes wrong somewhere else. The catch is control: the gateway, the terms and the block button all stay in Walmart's hands, so agents will shop in Walmart's store on Walmart's rules, not on the open web the agent hype describes.

What Walmart announced
Walmart's corporate post names three pieces. Agent Profiles give each AI agent a dedicated profile inside a customer's account, with its own purchase view and spending controls, due within about a month. The Walmart Agent Gateway is a direct connection for software that shops on a user's behalf, starting as a beta for companies and developers. The third piece is a set of terms of use that agents must follow.
The gateway uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standard way for AI software to call outside services directly. Walmart says it is meant to replace browser-based shopping — an agent following steps designed for people — which the company calls slow and error-prone. It is also designed to help an agent find a customer's usual items without sharing the customer's broader shopping history or personal information.
Walmart already offers conversational shopping integrations with Muse (Meta's AI assistant), ChatGPT and Gemini, plus Sparky, its own assistant. The new experience will extend to Sam's Club.

Controls shoppers keep
A customer authorizes each AI agent with its own profile and sees that agent's purchases separately from their own. The customer chooses between approving every purchase and letting the agent buy within a spending limit.
Approval is the default, and Walmart may require extra approvals even within an agent's limit. A customer can turn off or delete an agent's profile at any time.
Rules for agents
Under Walmart's terms, agents may not act beyond what the shopper intends. They receive no payment-card information and cannot add or change payment methods. Agents that break the terms will be blocked.
Walmart says agents see the same prices a human sees on Walmart.com, and that its returns process applies, including when an agent does not act as intended.
Unite.AI adds that agents must identify themselves as agents and respect rate limits, and that Walmart may limit, decline or reverse agent transactions and suspend or revoke access. Walmart is not responsible for a third-party agent's conduct, and the agent provider's privacy policy governs what the agent receives.
Walmart and Amazon
| Walmart | Amazon | |
|---|---|---|
| Third-party agents | Invited through Agent Profiles and a gateway; rule-breakers blocked | Blocked Muse and Perplexity's shopping agent, per The Verge |
| Other actions | Existing integrations with Muse, ChatGPT and Gemini | Also sued Perplexity; restricted Google and OpenAI agents, per Business Insider (via AOL) |
| Shopper controls | Per-agent profile, separate purchase view, approval or spending limit, revocation | Not described in the sources reviewed |
The Business Insider claims are single-sourced.
Who is affected
Walmart and Sam's Club customers who use AI agents get the profile, limits and separate record described above. Agent makers and developers must follow Walmart's terms to stay in. Muse is among the agents Walmart already works with — and one Amazon has blocked.
