Claude chat and Cowork merge into one app: who gets it and when

The problem
On September 16, 2026 Anthropic merged Claude chat and Cowork into one interface and launched Claude Docs and Slides in beta. For a knowledge worker who has been deciding which tab a task belongs in, that sounds like a simplification. It also raises practical questions: which plan gets it first, what happens to your existing Cowork chats and skills, and how much the assistant does without asking. The vendor's own announcement and an independent news report cover the same facts with different emphasis. This brief reconciles them and flags the parts that come only from Anthropic's framing.

Our take
The two sources agree on the substance, but one of them is the vendor, so claims about customer confusion and about how much control you keep are Anthropic's own framing. What is checkable is the rollout: Pro and Max plans first, Team and Free later, and Enterprise admins get at least 30 days' notice. If you are on Team or Free, nothing changes yet, and if you are an admin, the notice window is the useful commitment. Existing Cowork chats, projects, artifacts, connectors and skills remain accessible, which lowers migration risk. The automatic routing is the part the sources cannot settle: the announcement says Claude decides what a request needs, and it also says the default is to ask before acting. How often those approval prompts interrupt daily work is not reported. Our read: no one needs to change a workflow this week. If you have delegated recurring tasks, review what they are allowed to do once your account is switched.
What changed
Anthropic says Cowork and chat are now a single Claude experience, so users no longer pick a tab first and Claude routes the work itself (Anthropic). TechCrunch describes the merged window as combining chat, Cowork, Artifacts and Claude Design, and reports the problem the company wanted to solve: people often struggled to choose the right tab.
New pieces
- Claude Docs and Claude Slides launched in beta. Slides can be edited, presented, and exported as PowerPoint or PDF.
- Docs support commenting and sharing by link, and a task can be started on desktop and followed on mobile, per TechCrunch.
- Claude Design now works inside conversations, while people who already use it can keep using it standalone.
