Amazon has renamed Kindle Unlimited, its digital reading subscription, to Kindle+ and added thousands of audiobooks. The service was live by October 22, according to Engadget, with the U.S. monthly price unchanged at $11.99 plus taxes.
Key facts
- New name
- Kindle Unlimited to Kindle+
- U.S. monthly price
- $11.99 plus taxes, unchanged
- Borrowing cap
- 20 titles at a time
- Audio additions
- Thousands of audiobooks
What carries over
Engadget and Digital Trends both report thousands of added audiobooks; 9to5Mac and Digital Trends both report that the price is unchanged. Audio was already part of Kindle Unlimited, according to Engadget, but its report gives no baseline catalog count for measuring the expansion.
| Feature | Kindle Unlimited | Kindle+ |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. monthly price | $11.99 plus taxes | $11.99 plus taxes |
| Simultaneous borrowing | 20 titles | 20 titles |
| Audiobook selection | Existing audiobook catalog | Thousands of additional titles |
For existing subscribers, Amazon says reading history, bookmarks, notes and saved titles carry over, according to Engadget.
Amazon’s subscription explainer says the borrowing allowance covers digital books, audiobooks or comics. Borrowed books have no due dates while the subscription remains active. After cancellation, access continues until the next billing date and then ends.

Audio expands an existing reading catalog
Amazon describes Kindle+ as offering millions of eBooks alongside thousands of audiobooks, comics, manga and magazines. It also says thousands of included eBooks have companion audiobooks available at no additional cost.
The additions include both human-narrated and AI-narrated titles, according to 9to5Mac. Engadget describes Virtual Voice, an AI audiobook-narration offering, as being tested, while Digital Trends reports that some AI-narrated titles are already in the catalog.
Engadget also reports that authors using Kindle Direct Publishing, Amazon’s publishing program for authors, can include their audiobooks in the subscription.
Access beyond Kindle hardware
Amazon says a Kindle device is not required: readers can use the free Kindle app on other devices.
The company’s explainer identifies Kindle+ as a separate paid subscription rather than an included Prime membership benefit. Prime members get access to a limited, curated selection, it says, without specifying how much of the catalog that covers.
Not yet confirmed
- The exact number of added audiobooks and the proportions using human and AI narration are undisclosed.
- Country-by-country rollout dates are unconfirmed. Digital Trends alone reports a U.S.-first rollout for additions produced through ACX, Amazon’s audiobook production service; that qualification covers only those titles.
- Full Virtual Voice author eligibility, general launch status and compensation terms remain unconfirmed.
- Non-U.S. pricing and device-specific audiobook playback restrictions remain unconfirmed.
What to watch
- Publication of regional audiobook rollout dates.
- More detailed catalog counts and narration breakdowns.
- First-party author documentation covering audiobook inclusion and compensation.
